What is a Trophy competition?

As a club, we run two types of competitions: League and Trophy. Unlike League competitions, where members compete in divisions of photographers of similar experience, Trophy competitons are open, so all entries are judged together.

Our Trophy competions comprise: Portrait, Record, Natural History, Rural Landscape, Panel, Theme and Annual Exhibition (prints). During some seasons, we may run the Chairman's Salver, which is based on a topic chosen by our Chairman.

Please see a summary of each competition below. A detailed rules document is available for download. If you have any questions please talk to one of the committee members.

Portrait - prints and PDIs

To be awarded for the best image submitted in the competition. Portrait subject matter is deemed to be Human Portrait, Glamour or Figure Studies. See the results from last season's Portrait competition.

Record - prints and PDIs

To be awarded for the best image submitted in the competition. The title 'Record' is to include Applied Photography and Architecture, but exclude Natural History. See the results from last season's Record competition.

Rural Landscape - prints and PDIs

To be awarded for the best image submitted in the competition, which will be held annually. Photographs entered must be a pictorial study of a RURAL landscape (water/seascapes and skyscapes are acceptable), a landscape being a wide view or vista of scenery. See the results from last season's Rural Landscape competition.

Natural History - prints and PDIs

To be awarded for the best image submitted in the competition. Natural history is defined as flora, fauna, geology (including rock and pebble studies etc.) and astro photography (stars, planets etc.). Plants may be cultivated or wild. Fauna can include animals in captivity (and pets). Photographs should enable a wellinformed person to identify the subject material and to certify that it is an honest representation. Mounted specimens are ineligible. Any manipulation or modification of the original image must not alter the content of the original scene. See the results from last season's Natural History.

Panel - prints only

The aim of the competition is to encourage members to produce panels of prints linked by content or technique according to the photographer's choice.

Panels shall consist of a minimum of four and a maximum of six prints and will be displayed. Photographers should indicate how they wish their panel to be arranged. A 30 cm x 7.5 cm (12in x 3in) title may be displayed at the photographer's discretion. Members may enter as many panels as they wish.

The competition will be judged "off the cuff" and members must indicate to the Competition Secretary two weeks before the competition that they intend to submit an entry. The judge will award a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Theme - PDIs only

A selection of a minimum of three and a maximum of six PDIs (plus a title image if desired) on the photographers chosen theme(s) will be presented without commentary. The Judge will be asked to select a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition. See the results from last season's Theme competition.

Annual Exhibition - prints only

Each member may enter up to a maximum of four prints. Prints entered in previous Society Exhibitions will not be eligible, but any other prints including those entered in any of the Society's competitions (excluding the small print competition) will be eligible. There will be a trophy for the best print. See the results from last season's Annual Exhibition.
